MEDICAL
ABORTION Medical abortion is a non-surgical way
to end a pregnancy by taking medications.
EMW Women's Surgical Center offers medical abortions to patients who are 8
weeks and under LMP.
The medication taken is often referred to as the "Abortion Pill"
or RU486.
Two different medications are given for medical
abortions:
Mifepristone is a medication that blocks progesterone, the hormone necessary
to maintain a pregnancy. This medication is given at the clinic the first day.
The second medication, Misoprostol (Cytotec) is taken two days later
in the privacy of your home. This medication causes the uterus to contract
and expel the pregnancy.
The medications are successful in causing an abortion 90-95% of the time.
You will be required to return to the clinic three (3) weeks after
your first visit so the medical staff can ascertain that the abortion
has been completed.
If the treatment fails, you will be required to have a surgical abortion at
no additional cost to you.
Medical Abortion Services Include:
Ultrasound
Diagnostic Testing (pregnancy testing |
urinalysis | Rh blood type | CBC)
Counseling Services (informed consent |
individual pre-abortion | post-operative instructions | contraceptive)
Physical Exam
Gynecological Exam
Post-Termination Exam
If the patient is Rh Negative, there is an additional fee for mini gam.
